Bathroom mold is ugly, disgusting, and unhealthy. And, unfortunately, it often seems an ever-present problem.. These preventative measures and cleaning tips will help you get rid of the mold and mildew that collects in showers, baths and sinks.

Do Your Drains Drain?
First, make sure that you have good drainage in your sink, tub or shower. If the water does not drain as quickly as you run water, you have a present (or building) problem. When water doesn’t drain properly, it stands, creating an environment that is moist for longer periods of time. These types of environments are those in which mold thrives. Use a bleach solution, a chemical specially formulated to unclog drains.

Minimize
Toiletries, beauty tools, and soaps are common bathroom items, but do you need all of them? Variety is the spice of life, as they say, but almost-empty bottles of shampoo, the once-a-week facial scrub, and the plastic toothbrush cup are all breeding grounds for mold. The more stuff you have, the longer it takes for your shower, bath or vanity to dry. Damp or wet crevices will only encourage mold growth. Throw away, store, or use up any products that you don’t use frequently. Set or place beauty tools where they will not sit in collected water.

Thorough Cleaning
When you go to clean your bathroom, make sure that you remove all products first. Use a quality cleaning product and spray or wipe on all stained, soiled, damp, and moldy areas with a sponge - brushes can scratch surfaces, reducing their life and appearance. Use an old toothbrush to clean around faucets, drains, and in crevices. For moldy showers, it’s possible to use a mild solution of bleach to kill mold and prevent its immediate regrowth. However, never mix bleach with any other cleaning solution, as this could produce toxic fumes.

Before putting the products back, wipe them with a moistened cloth that contains some of the same cleaning solution. This will deter mold by removing any already present around the bases of bottles and jars, kill germs, and prevent the already sanitized surface from being re-contaminated with mold and bacteria.

Repairs and Remodeling
It may be that the caulking around your sink, tub or shower is peeling, old or cracked. Caulking that is no longer doing its job needs to bw replaced; it is often impossible to remove mold that has found its way behind caulking, and some mold even grows in the pores of the caulk itself. This is unsightly and unsanitary. Old caulking can be stripped away and replaced with new caulking appropriate for sealing areas that come in contact with water.

You may also find that replacing loose, old, or outdated faucets and fixtures reduces mold. Sometimes mold has grown inside the crystal or plastic casings of sink or shower taps. If you invest in solid handles for these fixtures, you will have eliminated one more spot in which mold likes to grow.

If you have the time, money, and motivation, a wonderful solution to mold prevention is to purchase a solid-piece tub or shower insert. By removing porcelain tubs and tile splash walls, you will be removing the best environment for mold growth and increasing the ease with which you clean. Plastic tub and shower inserts provide one slick surface, cutting down on the need for caulking, tile adhesive or mortar, and regular maintenance. These inserts are inexpensive, easy-to-install, and best of all, easy to clean. With regular care, a simple weekly wipe-down with a sponge is all that is required to keep it clean and mold-free.

Keeping your bathroom free of mold doesn’t have to be an routine task. Care of your bathroom, regular maintenance, and reduction of surfaces on which mold can grow will keep mold at bay.

If you lack space in your bathroom, there are a number of ways you can make the best of what space you do have. Here are some ideas that have worked great for our family:

Small corner shelves that are meant to go on the wall fit nicely into the corners of your bathroom counters. These are easy to find and give you several shelves to put makeup, knickknacks, etc., on.

The bathroom is a great place to keep your bathrobe. Place a self-adhesive hook on either the back of your bathroom door, or on the wall behind the door. Hang your bathrobe up after each use, and it’s ready for next time.

A way to organize the clutter on your bathroom counter is to buy a plastic tub with a handle on top. Place all your bathroom accessories (hair sprays, lotions) in the tub and place under the counter. When you’re ready to use, just take the tub out. When you’re done put the tub back under the counter.

Shower caddies are an inexpensive way to organize your shampoo, conditioner, razor, soap, etc., in the shower. We got the kind that hooks over the shower head and it kept slipping down, so we eventually ended up screwing it to the wall. It works great and keeps everything in one place.

If you have shower doors that tend to get water/soap scum build-up on them, keep a water squeegee (like you use on the windshield of your car) handy to wipe down the doors every time you take a shower. We keep ours in the shower hanging on the wall from a suction cup.

If you do not have a whole lot of cabinet space in your bathroom, you can purchase some small shelves to put above the toilets. On these shelves you can keep washcloths, hair spray, and toothpaste.

Visit http://www.MarinCountyBathrooms.com for more great ideas.

My mom has been having a hard time bathing herself. One of the main reasons is her shower/bathtub is very unsafe. It is really hard for her to get in and out of the shower/tub. We were going to hire someone to help us help her get into the shower/tub but she did not want that. She wanted to be able to bath herself. I started looking online for solutions and came across a site that sells walk in tubs. I was really excited to tell my mom about these great tubs that allow you to take a bath a feel safe. The door that lets you in the tub is water proof and there is a seat so you can sit and relax. At Marin County Bathrooms.com you can have them install your walk in tub in less than a day. Visit them at http://www/MarinCountyBathrooms.com to learn all about how a walk in tub can help your parents stay in their house longer. My Mom feels safe and clean in her new walk in tub.

Most people are aware of all the germs that a toilet can have. However most people don’t know that the toilet seat isn’t where most bacteria are found. Instead, the germiest parts of the bathroom are the spots you might not think about, like the toilet handle and faucets of your sink.

By taking care, you can protect yourself and your family. Here are some basic rules of thumb to help keep your bathroom - and your hands - clean, and to help you avoid the germs.

Close the toilet seat cover when you flush. Germs can be propelled into the air when the toilet is flushed. For that reason, it’s good practice to close the seat or step away from the toilet after flushing, particularly when using a public toilet.

Disinfect and clean often. There’s no such thing as a too-clean toilet. Clean and disinfect the toilet daily with a disinfecting cleaners

Handle the handle. Forget worrying about the seat. The handle is where most of the germs live on the toilet exterior. An easy fix in your home is to clean the handle daily. If you are In public restrooms, consider covering the handle with a small piece of toilet paper.

Consider toilet brush alternatives. The toilet brush, which is used and then stored, can be a germ receptacle.

How to wash your hands after using the bathroom: Lather your hands for 20 full seconds after using the bathroom. A quick wash won’t do it - particularly when using a public restroom. Water alone will not remove dirt or kill bacteria. A teaspoon of liquid soap (more sanitary than bar soap, but not a health necessity) or a generous portion of bar soap is needed

1. Paint. Paint your new small bathroom in light, cooler colors. Lighter colors on your small bathroom walls will feel airy and should cause an optical illusion where your eyes naturally try to look “beyond” the color. Try painting clouds on the ceiling - if successful, such design can really add much needed creativity and flare to your small bathroom!

2. Wallpaper. When you decide to use wallpaper on your bathroom walls make sure you use small patterns - you don’t want giant, blocky design overwhelm your bathroom space. You can also install a bathroom tile with a delicate pattern that will repeat itself on the floor.

3. Light. Play with the bathroom light fixtures - install heavy lighting or better yet, a skylight if you can. A bay window is ideal, of course, you can create additional space for storage by using its alcove.

4. Bathroom Mirrors. Place bathroom mirrors opposite each other if possible. This old space-creating trick should do wonders to your small bathroom; combined with lots of light, this will definitely make the space appear larger than it is. Also if you place a bathroom mirror (on the angle if at all possible) against the bathroom window you will create additional “bathroom window” that way and make the room more spacious.

5. Reflective Surfaces. Choose bathroom cabinets, bathroom vanities and bathroom countertops with shiny, reflective surfaces; see if you can install a glass shower enclosure during your bathroom remodeling process or even install a full-length mirror inside or right outside your shower.

6. New Horizones. Focus on the horizontal parts of your bathroom, for example, add a tile put a bathroom cabinet above the toilet, put up hooks and hang bathroom baskets and borders See if you can turn any unused vertical space for bathroom storage,

7. Bath Mats. Skip bathroom rugs or bathroom mats if possible or choose lightly-colored ones for your small bathroom. Don’t overdo it on towel racks - make sure only the necessary accessories make it to your new small bathroom.
